If you haven’t ever looked at Google trends it is a great source of information for your online marketing. Google Trends will tell you what is being searched for in real time, kind of like the “what’s trending” feature on Twitter and Facebook. More importantly Google Trends will allow you to dig deeper into the world of search and help you find some ideas to help you blog, create content, and even ideas for marketing your products and services.
Google Trends – What’s Happening Now?
The homepage to Google Trends provides information on what is trending right now when it comes to Google search. It will look something like this. While it’s fun to explore what animals people are searching for, the true value is found in the “Explore in Depth” section in the left hand column.
Practical Uses for Google Trends
1. Compare the Popularity of Keywords
Once you click on the “Explore in Depth” link you will see a screen that looks like the image below. Here you will be able to select various keywords and compare their popularity over time and by geography. You will also be able to see if that interest has been influenced by any major news stories by checking the headlines box. Your charts will look like this.
2. Identify Related Topics
After you have done your initial keyword research you can scroll further down the page and review top, and rising search terms that are related to your keywords.
- Top terms are generally related to your main keyword and may help you identify areas where your audience needs more info. Feature will help you understand your audience and what they need so much more.
- Rising terms will help you identify things your audience may be interested in tomorrow. Keywords that are rising in interest may provide a perfect opportunity for you to craft answers to questions that your audience doesn’t even know that they have yet.
