I want to tell you about one of my favorite local businesses growing up. Maybe you’ve been there too?
When I was young, I played softball every summer. After softball, my parents often took us to eat at PK Egan’s in Canby, MN where we lived. It was our favorite place to eat pizza, devour coat button fries, and feed quarters in the Pac-Man machine. Some of its most unique features included its magnificent tin ceiling, player piano, never-ending pitchers of pop, and basement party room.
On New Year’s Eve, 1984 I remember standing on Main Street in Canby, watching a fire consume PK Egans and adjacent small businesses. The tragedy of the day is etched in my mind, as is the resilience of PK Egan’s who quickly reestablished itself in a temporary location.
Years later, PK’s rebuilt its establishment in its former location on Main Street next to the theatre. Every chance I get, I return to eat at PK’s as do thousands of other people. A quick glance at their Facebook fan page indicates more fans than the population of Canby. PK Egan’s offers a product everybody loves, but with it, a touch of local flare and nostalgia. I bet you have a “PK Egan’s” right down your street. Please join me in creating more memories and supporting the local, small businesses in our (your) area this Saturday, November 27th on our First Annual National Small Business Saturday.
