Being a recent graduate, December 2007, from Minnesota State University – Moorhead, I have recently moved back into the community and have started getting a foot-hold.
One of my greatest passions is the sport of baseball. I have played for as long as I can remember and now play for Hutchinson’s Amateur team, the Hutchinson Huskies. It is only my second year with the team, but I have really started enjoying the game on a whole new level. Not only is the game fun, but new aspects come into play such as community involvement and being a role-model.
The Huskies host many youth baseball camps throughout the year and it provides a great opportunity for the players to give back to the community. In these camps we focus on building fundamentals in a positive atmosphere, in hopes that the kids who attend will take away something positive and use that in becoming a better player and teammate.
I think Huskies players have signed more autographs this year for kids than ever before. In my opinion, it is a testament to the success of the camps and parents who bring their kids to watch the games. For me, it brings a sense of accomplishment and responsibility by being able to reach the young players in the community and leave a positive impression. Although when I signed my first ever autograph after the Huskie Youth Camp in May I forgot to put my number in the kid’s hat, so there is a learning curve for everyone.
After only a few months of being back in town I am looking forward to what the future holds not only in baseball but also other community opportunities.
