The Hutchinson Leadership Institute (formerly known as Hutchinson Community Leadership Development Program) is in its 20th year this year. Almost 500 students have been through this program. The primary reason the program was started was to build leadership skills for professionals working in Hutchinson area businesses – be it small business owners or staff of larger organizations – the idea was to hone their leadership skills and interact with other professionals and network through this program. Over the years the program has evolved and the focus is now to begin with personal leadership skills and then understand team leadership, civic leadership, group skills, balancing leadership roles with personal lives, etc. This 9 month program is very extensive and a good way for anyone to plug into the Hutchinson community. I became involved in Institute as a participant in 2005. As someone who has been through the Institute, I feel very strongly about how much value this has added to my professional life. That is when I became involved in the background work that is put in by the Chamber towards this program. I felt that I could contribute to make this program better and joined the Design team. It has been a very fulfilling experience for me to see how some of the ideas that we put together have worked well while some others not so much – but it’s a work in progress and that’s what this Institute is all about.
This year is especially exciting has we’ve made some dramatic changes to the selection process and brought some accountability to the participants and their sponsors. I am excited to see how this year’s class fairs in the community project that they will be putting together. Also new this year is there is an Alumini newsletter that gets sent out each month with highlights to the program and features past graduates, some leadership insights, etc. If you’d like to subscribe to the newsletter, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
All in all, it’s something that I like to see grow and get better. If you have any questions, comments, or want to know more about this program, please email me at email@example.com. I look forward to hearing from you.
