To help people who may have the unofficial title of “webmaster” or “website administrator” somewhere in their job description, we have come up with a very basic webmaster checklist to help you manage the daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly website maintenance tasks. Following these recommendations will put you ahead of your competition and on track to give your customers a remarkable experience on your website.
Here is a basic, but important website maintenance checklist that also includes links to blog posts with more detailed information.
Daily/Weekly Website Maintenance Tasks:
- Log in to your website daily to check for completed customer forms or orders.
- Fix/replace any missing images as soon as possible.
- Add new or update content weekly to your site, blog, product descriptions, events, etc., since fresh content will go a long way toward giving a good website user experience.
- Update any contact information in your footer and on your contact page immediately.
Monthly/Quarterly Website Maintenance Tasks:
- Review your website statistics (i.e. Google Analytics) monthly and take action when needed.
- Fix any broken links.
- Review your local search visibility with Google & other search engines quarterly. Our online listing services can help ensure the best visibility.
- Make sure new products and services are promptly added to your website. Remove outdated products and clearly mark items that are out of stock.
- Check your staff/team pages for any staff no longer at your company, and add in anyone new.
- Review title tags, meta descriptions, and alt tags quarterly to make sure information is not missing.
- Test and tweak forms and automated messages quarterly. If you have forms on your website, you need to review them to make sure they are working properly and collecting the information you need. Remember, the fewer fields you have in a form, the more likely you will receive lead conversions. But with fewer fields, the leads will probably be less qualified.
Yearly Website Maintenance Tasks:
- Update time references and copyright in footer of your website or other locations.
- Review each page on your website for consistency (fonts, photo sizes, grammar & copywriting).
- Evaluate your active email accounts and delete unnecessary ones.
- Review your website domain names and expiration.
- Schedule an annual (or quarterly) review of your overall web strategy with your Account Director.
- Review your top-performing blog posts and make sure the content is not out-of-date so your bounce rate isn’t high.
- For accessible websites you’ll want to talk to your Account Director about regular accessibility check-ups at least once a year.
