Moving From Managed to Self-Managed Hosting
We understand you’ve decided to transition from our Safe & Sound Managed Hosting to a self-managed WP Engine account. This move will provide you with full administrative access to your WordPress website, giving you greater control and flexibility over your site’s management. While our managed hosting approach focuses on “we’ll make things easy for you,” your new self-managed setup will allow you to implement your own plugins, templates, custom solutions, and make immediate changes whenever needed.
Transfer Process
Step 1: Create Your New Account
- Go to WP Engine’s sign up page to create your account
Step 2: Find Your Support PIN
- Log in to your new WP Engine account
- Look in the bottom left corner of your screen
- Locate your Support PIN (it should start with the letter “B”)
- Share this PIN with your Account Director
Step 3: Choose Your Transfer Time
- Let us know what date and time works best for you to move your website
- We’ll schedule the transfer from our account to your new WP Engine account for that time
That’s it! Once you complete these three steps, we can begin moving your website.
Important Information About Your Transfer
Special Features That May Not Transfer
Our Safe & Sound Managed Hosting Plan has some special features that may not work on your new hosting.
- Premium plugins we’ve paid for (you’ll need your own licenses)
- Google or other third-party API keys (you’ll need your own)
- Special security features that only work on our servers
After the transfer, you’ll need to purchase licenses for premium plugins and get your own API keys to keep everything working smoothly. We’ll reach out to let you know which plugins and services you’ll need to take care of.
Domain, DNS, and Email Management
Services That Require Your Own Accounts
As part of our Safe & Sound Managed Hosting Plan, we may currently manage several additional services that you’ll need to transfer to your own accounts:
- Domain registration through eNom (here is information on setting up your own eNom account)
- DNS management services (will need to be transferred to your own Cloudflare account)
- Email services through Rackspace (here is information on setting up your own Rackspace account)
These services are benefits included in our Safe & Sound Managed Hosting Plan and are not available as standalone services. We recommend setting up these accounts before your website transfer to ensure a smooth transition.
Ongoing Support Options
While you’re moving to your own WP Engine account, we’ can still’re still here to support your website’s needs. We offer:
- Routine maintenance updates to keep your WordPress core, themes, and plugins current
- Ongoing update services for content changes, plugin configurations, or troubleshooting
- Technical consultation as needed for your new hosting setup
Just because you’re managing your own hosting doesn’t mean you have to manage everything else! We’re happy to continue providing the support services you need to keep your website running smoothly.
