I didn’t set out to become the local expert on helping small businesses hire hard-to-fill positions, but with the employment climate what it is and years of owning a business, I have ample opportunities to jump in and help. Every day business owners, as well as HR and marketing personnel share valuable insight into what’s working and not working. One thing is clear. Hiring in 2023 has three things surfacing over and over again that are critical to businesses looking to grow and operate fully staffed.
Critical to Operating Fully Staffed
- Culture Matters! “59% of people leaving their jobs want a company that better fits their values” from a recent survey from the World Economic Forum. A positive, healthy culture that is authentic to companies values will build trust, retain employees, and reduce the amount of hiring necessary.
- Trust is Imperative! At the last Leadercast LIVE, Andy Stanley and David Horsager both talked about values and trust. Lack of trust in their employer is the #1 reason people leave a current position. A culture of trust in leadership will make higher retention possible.
- Retention is Equally Important! You don’t want to burn out your HR staff by losing employees faster than you can hire. Ask your loyal employees why they stay and what they appreciate most about your culture and unique benefits. Do exit interviews with staff who are leaving so you can gain better insight into what needs to change. A rapid cycle of people entering and leaving your organization will kill your culture.
With unemployment rates hovering around a historic low of 2.5% in Minnesota, you need to up your game and be very intentional. I put some of my best hiring advice into this free guide you can request now. I can tell you that those taking my advice (or even implementing small, consistent changes) are seeing a difference.
