Last fall I explained that marketing is like a great chili recipe. There are components that blend together to create something more than the sum of its parts. Like every recipe or plan out there, there are things to be tweaked and improved upon. Here’s the new and improved “Ultimate Marketing Chili” recipe.
Marketing Chili Recipe (Your Marketing Plan):
1 Website (Current Content/Professional Design)
1 Pound of SEO (Title Tags, Meta Data, Pages Optimized)
1 Can of Blog (Good content; don’t go generic, get premium)
1 Can of Quality Copywriting
1 Bunch of accurate Business Materials (Autosignatures/Invoices/Letterhead)
Finely Chop & Segment Email Campaigns
1 Bulb of Tradeshows
1 Stalk of Press Releases
3 Cloves of Training
1 Can of Referrals
1 Handful of Location Marketing
1 Heaping Spoonful of Philanthropy (the LOVE in business)
Place your upgradeable website gently into your business pot (make sure your business can handle the marketing initiatives, you don’t want sales to boil over). Add SEO, blog and a pinch of business communications. Caramelize these together until they all are in sync and refer to each other. Then add the fragrant copywriting, email, PR, tradeshows, webinars, presentations, referrals, and location marketing. Set up your timer and simmer.
Enhance your marketing chili with mobile (don’t forget text) , surveys, advertising and promotional items. Ladle into bowls and generously garnish with social media engagement. These toppings enhance your chili appearance and may attract new people. Finally, analyze your results; would you give this recipe a 5 Star review? Was it an “ultimate” or are there things to maintain, tweak and improve? Are there ingredients that you would add or change? Remember, if you don’t like one thing, revise it; 2012 is a year of flexibility.
